Since 1970 the immigration population in the United States has dramatically risen. As part of the increase, the number of immigrant women have risen. Yet, few studies have focused on how they have fared in the transition to a new life here.
In an effort to shed light on such issues, Cornell University Professor Francine D. Blau examined the role of female immigrants in the United States as part of a ground-breaking study a few years ago. It remains the authoritative guide on the topic.
Among the subjects covered:
- How much does an immigrant’s country of origin affect their adjustment to American life?
- What role does assimilation play in that adjustment?
- Do differences between immigrants and the native-born population carry over to the second generation in labor supply, education and fertility, or do second generation women fully assimilate to native patterns?
Here is where you can find a copy of Blau’s study, published in the IZA Journal of Migration: Immigrants and Gender Roles: Assimilation vs. Culture.”
In addition, Blau’s work was highlighted in a special PBS News Hour report: How Do Gender Roles In An Immigrant’s Home Country Affect The Female Labor Force Here?
Given the important role of women in immigrant and mixed-status families, it’s my hope that further reseach will be conducted that augments and expands Professor Blau’s study in the near future.
